Worldbuilding/improvising with aphantasia?
I've been playing DnD for a couple of years now and I'm interested in DMing a campaign set in an original world. I've made some good progress on my worldbuilding already; I have a map for the continent I'm focusing on for the first campaign, a set of countries with at least general cultural info, a pantheon, etc.
The problem I'm running into is that I worry my worldbuilding is inherently limited by the fact that I have aphantasia. It's hard to describe, but basically I don't experience any of the senses in my head; I don't have a "mind's eye" (or a mind's ear, or nose, etc). So, while I still have an imagination and can come up with original ideas, I can't "picture" what anything in my world looks, sounds, smells, tastes, or feels like.
Often I'll get inspiration from a piece of art and then develop ideas from there, and that seems to work well. But sometimes I'll have an original idea, and in order to develop the aesthetic or vibe of that idea I need some kind of visual to work from. Since my brain doesn't supply that, I need to try to find it in something someone else has made. If I can find something similar to what I imagined, great! But if not, I feel like I've hit a dead end.
My other problem is that I know most people can picture things. I want to be able to "paint a word picture" for my players, but that's difficult when I can't see the picture in the first place. I can plan around that to a certain extent by preparing a written description of a new city or dungeon or monster. But I can't do that for everything, and so much of the advice I see for DMs is something along the lines of "just prep a general outline for the session and make up the details on the spot."
I guess I'm just looking to see if anyone else in my position or a similar one has been able to successfully DM. If so, do you just plan extensively for every session? Should I set an expectation with my players that I won't be able to provide much physical description on the spot? Will that turn people off of playing in my campaign? Input from non-aphantasics is also welcome.
TL;DR: I can't visualize things in my head. Are there other DMs out there in the same boat? Any advice for worldbuilding and improvising when you can't "picture" your world?
Thank you!!
