My Cello Concerto Tier List

Disclaimer: This is entirely my opinion. If you don't agree, that is totally fine. Enjoy what you enjoy (but you do have to like Prokofiev though.)

And of course, please send me more suggestions, I have a whole list to listen to but I want to hear your favorites that aren't included here or what I should change.

We will see what my undergrad ends up looking like, but I'm hopeful I can learn Weinberg at some point during it. And my life goal is to learn one of those top 2.

Maybe I'll make a sonata list at some point too...

I have a buzz on my cello

Hi friends. My cello recently developed this buzz. It's always had maybe a very slight flutter when I played open C. Recently (in the past 2.5 weeks), the flutter got louder, and turned into a slight buzz.

Now it's not a big deal for sound. Not audible over the sound of the notes unless plucking and it doesn't seem to register for anyone further than 3-5 feet away.

Problem is, I can't diagnose it, and neither can my local luthier (he's a great guy, but he doesn't work on more expensive instruments, but he did help me test things). The point of origination is in or around the joint between the fingerboard and heel. There's no open seams, the fingerboard is solidly glued, and nothing feels loose.

Pushing the fingerboard down on the end stops it. Pinching the fingerboard stops it. Pressing down on the nut or the strings in the pegbox stops it. Pushing up on the fingerboard from the right stops it.

It feels random. I'm giving a recital in 2 weeks and I the nearest trusted person to work on it is a 4.5 hour drive away.

I have 2 basic questions. First, if there's nothing coming loose, is it ok to leave it till July 18, when I'll have an appointment with my luthier anyway (also trying new bows and getting a new set of strings)?

Second, will this be able to be fixed? I know a luthier will know better the answer to that, but what are the possibilities here?

Difficulty of the Weinberg Cello Concerto

Hey everyone! Been a while since I've posted. I ended up getting into St. Olaf College for a Bachelors of Music in Performance. I'm very excited to attend college there. It's more than just career prep.

Yeah, blah blah blah, performance is a hard field, competitive and whatnot, blah blah. I get it. If it doesn't work out, I will get a masters in the art of teaching (MAT) and work as a music educator. I do, in fact, love to teach both privately and head an ensemble. I won't lose my passion for music if I can't make it in purely performance. Hopefully I can do some mix of everything. I'm hoping to do a performance masters if I can make a good one somewhere (and not pay too much- I shouldn't have much debt from my undergrad.)

Aaaaaanyway- I've recently been on a cello concerto listening spree after the QEC, and I'm curious if anyone could give me a difficulty estimate for the Weinberg C minor Concerto. It's such a beautiful work and I'd love to learn it.

I'm currently finishing up working on the Haydn C Concerto. I have greatly enjoyed it, and I've been a finalist in a few semi-local competitions on it (Central Iowa in Ames, and Fort Dodge). Unfortunately no wins, but I'll perform it with a pianist in a couple of weeks along with some piano works and a Gliere cello duet with my fantastic teacher(no. 5, check it out!)

I'm really hoping to learn Weinberg during my undergrad. I know that's largely up to my teacher but I'm curious if it's an achievable piece for that time frame.

And if you have any listening recommendations, please send them my way!

By the way, I know the amount of work I put in is the largest factor, but what are my odds looking like of getting into performance masters programs at various places? Early enough that it's hard to tell but I'm curious.

Some Post-Brawl Cup Thoughts

Ok, I'm a biased fan like everyone else. Just to preface.

But here's a few random thoughts.

  1. FUT is going to be absolutely insane if they can get guesti in a lan. They performed incredibly well for having a sub.

  2. LeNain is so underrated.

  3. NA looks better this year. Not dominant by any means, but both NA teams are on a different level than the past. And I'm very excited to see what happens with TE and Vatic over the next while.

  4. The structure of the brawl cup is a bit... flawed. If tribe had lost to FUT in the group stage, Tribe would have had an easier bracket and by the current results, have actually won NA a LAN spot. I understand this is by no means a guarantee.

But FUT lost to Tribe, and therefore (probably unintentionally) matchfixed so that they wouldn't have to play Hmble.

  1. So then surely if we all glaze FUT, we can also glaze Tribe for beating them, right? EMEA fans are so single-minded on hating other regions out of arrogance I guess that it gets ignored when an NA team actually makes top 4 and effectively places second in the world.

  2. EMEA is not a deep region. Hmble and FUT are on a totally different level from the rest of the region. I know that other teams are solid, but teams from EA and NA were competing and generally performing better than the remainder of EMEA.

  3. Just a musing, but I wonder what would happen if a team like CR/ZETA/TRB/RLM/RNTX were to get to scrim with EMEA for an extended period of time. Seems like EMEA draft is just a cut above the average for other regions.

  4. This brawl cup was boring. Final day didn't have a single close match. Booooo. My favorite matches were RLM/Zeta, TRB/FUT, and TRB/TL.
