Do analog hands covering data bother you on Garmin faces?

I like analog-style garmin faces, but screen size makes the tradeoff pretty obvious.

If the hands can cover data on a forerunner 970, it’s even more noticeable on smaller watches

That’s especially true when the face is trying to show more than just time and steps.

On SURGE I added a center long-press that hides the hands for 4 seconds so you can quickly see what’s underneath.

...i’m thinking about making that configurable: 4s, 7s, 10s, or hands OFF until you bring them back.
would that be useful on a daily watch face, or would you rather keep the behavior simple?

Just so you know, SURGE is a paid watch face.
nothing crazy, just a few bucks, about a morning coffee,
before the price police show up for a watch face that costs a tiny fraction of the garmin it runs on

have a solid one.

Question about analog Garmin faces that show a lot of data

For people using analog-style garmin faces: do the hands covering data actually bother you?

I see it on bigger watches too, even something like a Fenix 8 51mm if the face has enough fields
on smaller models like an Epix 42mm, it’s obviously more noticeable.

I added a small feature to SURGE where a long-press in the center hides the hands for 4 seconds, so you can read the data underneath.

I’m now considering making that editable: 4s, 7s, 10s, or maybe hands stay OFF until you turn them back on.

useful feature, or unnecessary?

Just so you know, SURGE is a paid connect IQ face. Nothing crazy, just a few bucks, about a morning coffee, before the price police show up for a watch face that costs a tiny fraction of the Garmin it runs on.

thoughts are welcome

Small UX thing I added to Fenix 8 SURGE: hiding the hands for a few seconds

One thing I keep running into with analog-style Garmin faces is that the hands will eventually cover some data.

It happens even on a Fenix 8 51mm, just because there’s so much info on screen. On smaller watches, like an Epix 42mm, it becomes even more obvious.

so on SURGE I added a small workaround:
long-press the center of the dial and the hands disappear for 4 seconds, just enough to read what’s underneath...

While wrtiing this, i started thinking that maybe those 4 seconds should be editable: 4s, 7s, 10s, or maybe keep the hands OFF until you tap again.

hmm, i really like that,
Would that actually be useful, or is 4 seconds enough?

I made this watch face with a pretty rugged look on purpose, so I honestly assumed it would mostly click with guys.

then at home the first person who picked it was my wife.

So that was a nice reality check. I had framed it in my head as a more "masculine" design because of the overall robustness and heavier aesthetic,
but turns out that read was way too simplistic.

besides the look,
some things I like about this one is that it gives a pretty decent amount of datatype options, two types of watch hands, and color themes,
so you can tune it quite a bit depending on what you actually want on screen.

anyway,
I’m curious if it reads the same way to other people or if I was just projecting my own assumption onto it.

If anyone wants to check it more closely or grab it,
I’ll leave the IQ store link below.

have a nice one.
