Passed first time but reversed into someone's car

I've had my car for around a month after passing a few months ago.

I took it really slowly just driving locally and have been practising parallel parking loads. I had to drive to visit an ill family member at 10pm last night and got on the dual carriageway for the first time, the entire drive went really well and i felt really proud of myself. Pulled up outside the door and as I was reversing i hit the car behind me.

I cracked their registration plate and theres a slight scuff on the back - its a neighbour of my families so will pay for the damages ,hopefully they wont claim it on my insurance.

I feel like a massive idiot and won't be driving for a while now. What's stressed me out is that it genuinely was so dark I didnt realise how close i was and im worried ill make the same mistake again. I dont have parking sensors but my instructors car did, im not sure how to know when to stop reversing if you cant see anything in your mirrors.

Family has had a right go at me already for being a twat
