The ancestors of the Grey tribe could be aliens
The tribe's origin
According to the legend in Todd's notes, the formation of the tribe was influenced by:
- a great owl from the sky;
- a woman born from the union of the owl and a man who was lost in the woods;
- a pack of wolves who became human and united with the woman.
And as Todd pointed out, this story was likely fabricated and then evolved overtime.
However, in Strange Boxes Puzzles there is another view of this story from a person who is related to the Grey tribe - Vincent Grey, Tala's grandfather. According to Vincent's version:
- Greys were descendants of a great, ethereal deity, and given to earth;
- They eventually joined the indigenous people, who would go on to form a tribe around their family: the Grey tribe. An uncommon occurrence for an extraordinary cirmustances;
- A group of Greys left the tribe to found Nockfell, because of the land's strong connection to the spirit world;
- Some european settlers, who agreed to peace, were allowed to live in Nockfell;
- Phelps Ministry was formed through an unique faith that brought the people of Nockfell together.
These two versions have one common detail: the Greys' ancestor was a person from the sky. And this person might not necessarily have been a supernatural creature, as there was more fiction than facts about the tribe's origin. This was stated by Tala who tried to get more information about her family.
"I can trace our linage back a few generations but then it's all word of mouth after that. These paintings are also pretty odd. They aren't documented anywhere, that I could find, and their appearance is very different from other Native American paintings" - Tala in Episode 5
And then there is a man who came to Earth from space - Jim Johnson. A man from the sky, as the Devourers of God believed him to be.
The ability to see the future
Before we'll come back to the Greys, let's turn to Sal's dream from Episode 3:
- There is information about the Great Beast which Tala will talk to Sal about in Episode 5;
- There is a theme of truth and knowledge that can be obtained with the help of the Wise Prophet. And we can see parallels between the Prophet and Rose, the triangled doodle with a broken soul and Jim.
And in Jim's journal we find out that he'd seen glimpses of the future and glimpses of the past. So we can compare knowledge about the future to that very truth Mr. Dood El tried to find. And there is a similarity between the Greys, whose descendants might have the ability to see the future (for example, Citlali Grey), and Jim who acquired this ability.
Disappearances of people
There were cases when people (or their bodies if their death was confirmed) disappeared physically or were considered missing. And in almost all cases they were either aliens/partly aliens (Evelyn, Jim and Larry) or members of the Grey family (Rose and Vincent).
"She's gone, just vanished" - Jim about Evelyn.
"And all of his things were still here... He just disappeared" - Larry about his father.
"They never did find Larry's body" - Ashley in Episode 5.
"How else would she have disappeared like she did? If she died, she didn't leave behind a body" - Sal about Rose
"I don't visit too often but my grandfather has recently gone missing" - Tala in Episode 5
It is not possible yet to say for sure whether this is typical for aliens, but it can hardly be a coincidence either.
The existence of various forms of humanoid life
When Jim met Rose for the first time, he felt a strong sense of familiarity around her, but he didn't feel it when he met Lisa, for example. In his journal, he also shared his thoughts on the possibility that other forms of humanoid life exist.
And in Episode 4, Sal, talking about Rose, may suggest that she might be an alien (if he hadn't told Larry the truth about Jim earlier), and that other life forms might not be so different from regular humans.
It's also possible that Sal's thoughts were influenced by Jim, but given the other similar details, it would be strange if such thoughts were written in for nothing.
As a result, it can be assumed that the Greys' ancestors (and therefore their descendants) could have had an unearthly origin, like Evelyn and Jim. Not necessarily the same, but still unearthly.
