Is high school a good age to focus on shortstop?

I’ve always been a believer in having kids play multiple positions, but as a kid enters high school, when is a good age to focus on shortstop?

Some added context: My kid pitches but wants to stop telling coaches on new teams that he pitches so that he can focus on shortstop in the off seasons as he also wants to play college baseball. Pitching takes a lot of time away from training he feels would make him a better shortstop.

My worry is that a lot of coaches always think their ace pitcher is their shortstop by default. This has been common is youth baseball and middle school. Will high school level coaches still have that mentality? If they don’t see him as a player who pitches, does he suddenly become less of a player in their minds? Does this type of coaching still exist at high school levels?

Also this is Massachusetts if that also helps with context.
