Help with workflow containing a delay

Hoping someone can help. I've been working with Monday for about a year (building boards/forms/automations), but this is my first foray into workflows, and its specifically for the delay feature.
We have an executive whose assistant gets asked for a lot of "extra tasks" and I was asked to set up a board and form for those tasks to come in, but also for the executive to approve tasks and add comments, and for that info to get emailed to her assistant so she knows what she needs to do.
My assumption is that she's going to choose an approval status first, and then add her comments (and if it's a straight "Approve" without contingencies, she may not have comments to add. So I can't make the comment column the automation trigger.)
So I set up a workflow that triggers when the approval status on an item changes. There's then a 5 minute delay, to allow the executive time to enter her comments. And then it emails her admin with the name of the task, the approval status, and any comments.
But the comments are not coming through, despite having been entered within a minute of the status change. (I thought Monday would wait until the end of the delay period, before querying the data in the board, but apparently this was a wrong assumption.)
Can anyone tell me how to fix this, please?
