Targeting stripers in the San Francisco Bay Area

Hello all. I haven't been fishing in a long while, and am leaving California in January. I'm hoping to have some fun in the Bay Area before I'm gone for good. I need me a good fight, and a big striper sounds perfect.

I've got a 6'6 medium rod with a 2500-3000 (cant remember which) spinning reel. Not ideal, but it's what I have. I was thinking live bait. If anyone else has done it, how did you rig it all up? What was the biggest you caught?

Is the "secret sauce" for getting selected teachable?

SF, like pretty much any other SOF unit, has this requisite of being this type A super smart gigachad who is just built different. How much of that is true seems to fluctuate from source to source, from the outside looking in.

The one thing that I find is consistent within any claims is that, while the pipeline has physical challenges, it is (apparently) mostly mental. It leads me to wonder exactly how much of this mentality is teachable/learnable, and how much of it really is just being born a certain way?
