Neighbors taking advantage
I own a multifamily home with a parking lot. The parking lot has two driveways. One which I own entirely by myself, one which is shared with my neighbor. When my wife and I bought the house we were excited. We waved to everyone said hi, didn’t talk much, but tried to be friendly. The shared driveway neighbor was an elderly couple, only ever saw the wife and she would barely acknowledge me. Winter came, I was the only person clearing both driveways. They would cut across my lot to get to their property. Normally I wouldn’t care because, it’s just asphalt, but when I’m doing all the snow removal, you’re now compacting the snow, and you can’t even wave back, nah you can’t use that driveway now. That turned into me being a racist according to my neighbors. All I said was “if you aren’t going to help maintain the property, I don’t want you using the property”.
Year goes by, I start talking to her son here and there. Seems alright. I start clearing the other driveway following winter. Son tells me how grateful he is we shoot the shit occasionally. One day he parks on my lot all night and the following day. I was working an 16 hour shift, so it wasn’t a huge deal until I got home and wanted to park. He swore up and down it wasn’t his car (camera caught him parking), but he eventually “got someone to move it”. I say, “listen dude it’s just asphalt, if you need to squeeze a car over here, let me know first.” We continue to be friendly, he even invites us over to a cookout. I’m happy I’m thinking “awesome, neighborhood is coming together and maybe one day we can do something like organize a block party”. I can’t make it to said party because of other family things, what happens while I’m gone is
- His guests park in my lot and block in my tenants
- Random dogs came onto my property and start pissing and shitting on my property
- They were bumping music until at least 11PM.
Now I’m going to talk to him today and basically say, wtf dude. Like honestly if he said “XYZ can I park some cars in your lot?” I would’ve said “yeah put them at A,B, and C” but he didn’t ask. I’m assuming he’s thinking because he invited me that it made it all good to do whatever?
