I’m currently on F-1 STEM OPT and planning international travel for my sister’s wedding. I want to understand the safest approach if I upgrade my H-1B to premium processing.

My details:

• Currently on F-1 STEM OPT (valid until July 2027)
• F-1 visa stamp valid until Dec 2027
• H-1B FY2027 selected and filed on May 15 , 2026
• Filed as Change of Status (COS)
• Planning to request premium processing
• Travel plan: end of June 2026 to mid-July 2026
• Reason: sister’s wedding on July 3, 2026

My questions:

1. If H-1B is approved through premium processing before I travel, is it safe to travel and re-enter on F-1 STEM OPT?
2. Since my F-1 visa and STEM OPT are still valid, do I need H-1B stamping for this trip if I return before Oct 1?
3. After H-1B approval but before Oct 1, is re-entry on F-1 generally straightforward with proper documents?
4. Any risks or things I should be careful about in this situation?

Would really appreciate insights from people who have traveled in a similar situation after H-1B approval but before October 1.

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on travel risks. Here is my situation:

• Current Status: F-1 STEM OPT (expires June 2027).
• H-1B Status: My lottery was picked, and my employer is filing the petition with Change of Status (COS) on May 16, 2026.
• Planned Travel: I want to visit my home country from June 10, 2026, to July 5, 2026.
• Plan: Re-enter the U.S. on my valid F-1 STEM OPT visa/EAD.

My main concerns:

1. If I leave while the H-1B is pending, will my Change of Status be automatically abandoned?
2. If it is abandoned, do I have to go for consular processing, or can it be "fixed" without leaving again?
3. Has anyone traveled in this specific window (after filing but before Oct 1) and had issues at the border?
