Hey everyone, beginner here! I recently started learning cello alongside my kid (she joined the school orchestra, so I finally pulled the trigger on a full-size for myself so we could learn together).
By far, the most painful part for me has been figuring out the right-hand thumb grip.
What I tried first: I looked into commercial aids like CelloPhant, Wada, Stringvision, and Bowmaster. I actually tried Wada and Stringvision, but they weren't quite doing it for me. I even thought about 3D printing a custom grip, but I wasn’t sure standard filament would be comfortable enough since it’s pretty hard.
The Solution: I had some leftover two-part silicone mold putty lying around, usually used for crafts, and it gave me an idea. Why not try it?
It worked perfectly!! See photos!
Simply buy a silicone mold putty kit at Michaels, Target or Amazon. Take equal amounts of the two putty parts and knead them together. Press the putty onto your bow and shape it whatever way you want to comfort your thumb and middle finger. Wait about 30 minutes for it to cure.
Once it sets, it becomes firm but stays slightly rubbery and flexible. It’s way more comfortable than any other commercial pieces on the market.
Just wanted to share this hack in case any other beginners are struggling with thumb pain. Let me know if you try it!
