Beware of this doctor

I wanted to share a situation I’m currently dealing with as a caution to others regarding Sports Medicine Centre, Dr Guillermo Alvarez and Adriana Aguilar. During a physical therapy treatment involving electrode therapy, I sustained a third-degree burn that became necrotic and was severe enough to require ongoing medical treatment, including debridement, medications, wound care, and follow-up medical visits. At no point prior to treatment was I informed that a burn was a potential risk, and I did not sign any consent or disclosure paperwork acknowledging that risk.

Since the injury, I have continued to incur medical expenses and have experienced ongoing pain, stress, and disruption related to treatment and healing. I requested reimbursement for both the medical costs associated with the burn and the unused portion of my prepaid therapy package, including the session during which the injury occurred. They have refused reimbursement for unused services.

The clinic minimized responsibility by describing the injury as a possible reaction that can “occasionally occur.” If there are known risks associated with a procedure or device, patients should be informed beforehand so they can make an informed decision about treatment.

I am still attempting to resolve this professionally and privately, but I felt it was important to make others aware so they can ask detailed questions about risks, consent forms, and clinic policies before undergoing similar treatments.
