Tonight my dog reminded me exactly what GSDs were bred for

My 3.5 year old GSD/Pit mix is usually super indifferent to strangers. During walks he’ll pass people without even turning his head, and he’s always friendly with anyone I actually introduce him to. Zero people reactivity.

Tonight though, I took him on a really late walk around the neighborhood and there was one woman walking alone on the opposite side of the street in the dark. He noticed her from pretty far away and immediately became extremely alert. Not aggressive at all, just intensely aware of her presence.

As we passed, he would NOT let her out of his sight. He kept turning his head while walking, looking around parked cars and bushes to keep visual on her, and even kept looking back until she was completely out of view. He’s done similar things before, but this time it really hit me how safe I feel having him with me at night.

Needless to say, he got extra treats when we got home lol.

Anyone else experience this with their GSDs or mixes? I know shepherds are naturally protective, but actually seeing it happen in real life is kind of crazy. Proud of my boy.
