5 basic Mistakes I made when using my Silhouette cameo 4
Hello, I recently picked up my silhouette cameo printer a few months ago, and now that I've gotten it dialed in I figured I would share the main issues i came across and how I fixed them, from least to most important! All linked included are non affiliate and I do not gain anything from you purchasing these products, I just want to make things easier for anybody trying to use this machine
Mistake 1:Using the Mat that Came with my printer
While the mat works, its slightly prone to slipping, especially over time. The mat I ended up switching to was this one from amazon, and I haven't come across nearly as many issues with slippage since. A minor issue but it would sometimes mess up some cuts!
Mistake 2: Not having support for the paper while cutting
When using the Cameo, You will find that the mat hangs over the front of the machine and onto whatever surface you have below, or the air if you have nothing below like in my case. This can lead to distortion in scanning, as well as slippage. What I did to fix this was as followed: I installed this Support and guide, and now my mat is lined up every time, scans every time properly, and is supported all the while. Its not a perfect solution as the center bows just a tiny bit, but it works well enough for me.
Mistake 3: Using regular sticker paper and Laminating it after the fact
When i first started out I purchased regular sticker paper and laminate sheets in bulk, and I still have quite a bit of it, but recently, I purchased Glossy Sticker paper online from amazon and the results have been wonderful, No longer do i have to spend time lining up laminate and scrapping it with a tool, I can just print directly to the paper. I also no longer need to worry about messing up a sheet that I would then have to reprint, and it looks more vibrant, too. I suppose I could still put laminate over it to make it extra durable, but I'm pretty content with what I have now.
Mistake 4:Print to PDF Is your enemy
For a long time when printing, i would have issues with scanning the documents to start the cut, or have the device overshoot the marking lines, and after a long while of troubleshooting, I finally figured out the culprit: Print to PDF. It seems to slightly shrink the resulting image when it does this compared to simply printing directly, which caused me to have tons of misalignment and other issues with my prints. Since switching this I havent had another misprinted piece yet.
Mistake 5: Using the Auto blade at all
Seriously, I don't know why the make the auto blade at all, it seriously messed up everything i would throw at it, and I couldn't figure out what was the cause of the issues for easily a month and a half, or why it wasn't cutting all the way through my pieces. Using autoblade led to my cuts having about a 30% success rate and the cuts were super rough when it did work. What I ended up picking up to fix this was a Manual Blade Cutter And immediately my cut success rate shot way up, although I can no longer create sticker sheets with it since it seems to cut all the way through the paper rather than through just one layer of the paper. (But holy cow after the turmoil i went through ill take that any day.)
Aftermath of fixing these problems:
I can now cut without worrying about misalignment, slippage, or that my paper wont get cut all the way through, saving me time, money, and stress. I hope this is helpful for anybody looking for solving their issues!
