Advice For Financial Assistance

I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with graduate/doctoral financial aid or anyone who has been in a similar situation.

I’m currently enrolled in a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program at Capella University. I’m about halfway through my current quarter, and my financial aid dashboard had been showing that my aid amount was established and that it was time to review my offer, but no actual financial aid offer ever appeared.

I finally contacted Financial Aid myself and was told that I have reached the federal Stafford/Direct Loan lifetime limit, so they cannot award me additional federal Direct Loan funding. I also applied for a Graduate PLUS Loan, but unfortunately the credit decision was denied.

One of my biggest concerns is that I wasn't notified about the lack of funding before starting the quarter. When I asked why I wasn't informed earlier, I was told that students are responsible for making sure they have sufficient funding and that notifications are automatically sent once a balance has been past due for an extended period.

Had I known before the quarter started that I wasn't going to receive the federal aid I anticipated, I would have had time to explore other financial options before getting this far into my classes.

I'm currently requesting a formal review from the university, but I'm also trying to figure out how I can financially continue my doctoral program.

For anyone who has been in this situation, what options did you find?

I'm especially interested in:

  • Scholarships or grants for doctoral/DSW/social work students
  • Institutional or emergency financial assistance from universities
  • Employer tuition assistance or reimbursement
  • Graduate PLUS reconsideration or using an endorser
  • Alternative education loans or other funding options
  • Payment plans that are manageable while continuing school
  • Resources for students who have exhausted federal Direct Loan eligibility
  • Any options that could help me avoid high-interest private student loans

I’ve worked hard to get this far in my doctoral program, so I really don't want finances to be what prevents me from continuing. Any resources, programs, organizations, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
