The Blazing Death Ship is looking for campmates 2026

The Blazing Death Ship is looking for campmates 2026

We are a small but mighty Mutant Vehicle Support Camp and would love to have you join us (unless you're an obnoxious moron, then please don't apply). We are planning on being around 15-20ish campers and have a solid crew that has formed over many years - the ship was originally built in 2013. We are all pretty good at building stuff and making shit happen. We love to collaborate with other camps and this year will be co-living with Legends of the Hidden Playa, and join activities with them.

What we offer

  • The coolest Mutant Vehicle on Playa
  • Our very own resident DJ
  • Shade structure for your tent. If you are planning on bringing anything bigger, please let us know beforehand so we can figure out space
  • Enough drinking water for the week (this is not a challenge)
  • A mediocre shower & grey water evap grid
  • A fully stocked kitchen with all the supplies you’d ever dream of: 2 gas cooker stoves, a dishwashing station, cooking utensils and every spice and herb you’ve ever heard off, …
  • Daily freshly cooked gourmet brunch and dinner (with usually enough leftovers for lunch!) - (see requirements below for dinner details)
  • A shade area/ chill lounge with plenty of seats to lounge around in
  • Trash collection/ recycling/ a compost maybe - we’d still love for you to bring as little trash as possible
  • A little bit of electricity - enough to charge your phone and headlamp, but not crazy amounts for your very own home entertainment system, so if you need fancy stuff and A/C, we might not be the ones for you.
  • Communal ice runs and limited cooler space
  • A lightly stocked bar with fancy(ish) drinks
  • A fun Slack channel to get to know us ahead of time/ organise logistics/ etc
  • Unlimited granola bars, coffee, electrolyte drinks, and snacks
  • Mutant Vehicle Rides – we take nightly group trips out on our camp mutant vehicle to visit art, deep playa music performances, and other camps around the city
  • A burn barrel that moonlights as a lovely campfire at night time
  • We have some extra bicycles that you can use during the burn - please let us know if you need one
  • Excellent placement on 4:15&B

Who we are looking for

  • You are responsible for cooking dinner one night for the entire camp. If this is something you absolutely don’t want or can’t do, please let us know and we figure something else out.
  • You have to sign up for 3 other shifts: Cleaning after mealtime, making breakfast, driving the ship, ice runs, bartending, meat hall tending … We'll be sharing a sign up sheet pre burn for you to decide!
  • We cannot take your bike back after the burn - we have too many already (let us know if you need one!)
  • De-MOOP your stuff before you arrive. We don’t want to collect too much trash to take back!
  • Participate with us - we don’t need you to be attached to our hips, and we all typically do our own things during the day, but we love to get to know you and have you as an active part of our camp. Join us for shared meals, come on rides with our mutant vehicle, share a drink with us, and join us for some campfire action.
  • We have zero tolerance for drama, discrimination, sexual misconduct, or violence.  You will be asked to leave our camp and/or our events immediately, with no refund.
  • Commitment to an eight-hour strike shift on the Sunday of burn week. It sure is fun to throw the best party on the playa all week long, but that also means it needs to get cleaned up. Plan on staying until the ship doors are closed and locked on Sunday night. THIS IS MANDATORY for all campers.

More about us:
The Blazing Death Ship was created in 2013 when a bunch of fairly inexperienced burners got struck by inspiration and decided to build their own mutant vehicle. Having absolutely no relevant prior experience, they took welding classes and learned the ropes of metal fabrication and design, resulting in hours (read: an entire summer) spent on metal scrap yards, now defunct makers spaces, and backyards of friends who were told that this wouldn’t take over their entire garden for that long… The rest was learned in the welding school of hard knocks which resulted in burning of some clothes and lacerating some legs with an angle grinder and having to go to an emergency room… But all of these valuable learning experiences led to creating the coolest viking-themed Mutant Vehicle on playa, and the foundation for a mutant vehicle support camp that has been returning every year since.

How to apply:
If the above sounds enticing, please apply using our extremely thorough camp application form (https://forms.gle/Rm755eg2q6tqR9aZ6 ) that may or may not be partially inspired by other camp applications, and we’ll get back to you! Should you have any questions in the meantime, do not hesitate to reach out!

PEERS is recruiting Squaddies! Visit camps, celebrate their work, and help Placement make BRC better

Hey all!

I volunteer with PEERS (Placement's Exploration and Engagement Research Squad) and we're recruiting for this year!

What we actually do: you go out in a pair and visit theme camps around the city. The first job is just to tell them they're awesome - genuinely, camps put insane amounts of work in and a lot of it goes unseen. Then you ask a few questions about how their placement went and how their neighborhood feels, and you listen. Take a couple photos. That's it.

The reason it matters: that feedback goes back to the Placement team so the people designing neighborhoods actually learn from the folks living in them. Nobody knows a block like the people camping on it.

It's one 3-hour shift minimum, Mon–Fri. They train you, and it's fine if it's your first burn. Honestly it's also just a great excuse to go see corners of the city you'd never wander into.

Sign up through the Volunteer Questionnaire on your Burner Profile and select PEERS.
