9 LPA Data Engineer (~4 Yrs Exp) | Converted IIM Amritsar & SIMSREE | Should I drop, double down on tech, or re-take CAT/GMAT?
Hey everyone, need some brutal, realistic perspectives on my next steps.
1. My Current Position
- Profile: 25M | 9/8/9 academics | NC-OBC category.
- Role/CTC: Data Engineer | 9 LPA.
- Work Ex: ~3.5 years currently. Will be 48+ months by the time the MBA 2027 batch starts.
2. What I Have Converted
- IIM Amritsar (Offered)
- SIMSREE Mumbai (High chance via state counseling)
3. The Dilemma & Next Steps
Leaving 9 LPA to make 15–18 LPA after a 2-year break + debt feels financially inefficient. I’m also worried my 48+ months of work ex will hurt me in traditional 2-year MBA summer placements.
I see three clear paths ahead:
- Option 1: Join Amritsar or SIMSREE. Take the pivot, forget coding, and move into mid-tier corporate management/finance.
- Option 2: Retake CAT / GMAT. Target >99%ile. Given my NC-OBC status and 9/8/9 profile, aim for old IIMs or 1-year Executive MBAs (ISB, IIM PGPx) where high work ex is actually an asset.
- Option 3: Stay in Tech. Skip the MBA entirely. Upskill heavily in data infrastructure (Kafka, distributed systems, production AI infra) and make a lateral switch to a product firm for 20+ LPA.
4. What I want to know from the community:
- Does 48+ months of work experience actually ruin summer placements in traditional 2-year IIMs?
- Is it worth settling for a Baby IIM / Tier-2 ROI college at my experience level, or should I try again for a Tier-1 1-year program?
- For the tech folks: How realistic is it to switch from a service-based background to a product firm for a direct 20+ LPA jump compared to cracking a 97+ %ile in CAT?
No sugarcoating. Let me know what you think.
