It seems like gear points are calculated solely by how many points scored by the player. I just had a quarter with 2points and 9 steals with sga but I only got 34gear points. And in 2nd quarter i had 15points with sga, which I received 78 gear points.(I am fully maxed out on OKC fandom). Maybe if the devs can program the game to also consider other stats like steals which would be beneficial for pg, and rebounds blocks which would be beneficial for pf/c etc. Overall, it would reduce the grinding time for gears for all players.
