Anterosuperior Labral Fraying of the left hip
Hey everyone — hoping someone here has been through something similar and can share what worked for them.
About 2–3 weeks ago I sustained a hip injury. After getting an MRI, I was diagnosed with Anterosuperior Labral Fraying of the left hip along with a lumbar strain. For those unfamiliar — the labrum is a ring of cartilage that lines the hip socket and helps stabilize the joint. The anterior superior portion sits at the front-top of the socket, right in the hip crease area. Fraying means the tissue is disrupted at the surface level — not a full tear, but definitely significant enough to affect daily function.
MRI confirmed: Focal fraying of the anterior superior labrum. No full tear identified. Lumbar strain affecting spinal stability and contributing to nerve irritation.
What's making this really rough is the combination of symptoms hitting at once:
— Constant burning sensation starting at the hip and radiating down into the glute and leg
— Sharp pinching in the anterior hip with any internal rotation movement
— Pain when lying flat and raising the left leg
— Difficulty standing fully upright — body wants to compensate and lean forward
— Noticeable limp — shorter stride on the left, less weight-bearing time on that side
— Limited range of motion — even basic exercises like glute bridges cause pinching and increased burning
— Worst trigger: pointing toes inward while lying down — immediate pain response
The burning that travels down the leg has me thinking there's a nerve component on top of the labral and lumbar issues — possibly sciatic irritation or a nerve root being compressed from the lumbar strain. The MRI showed the sciatic nerve looked unremarkable, but the symptoms are hard to ignore.
I'm currently managing with rest, icing, anti-inflammatories, and some gentle home stretching (supine knee to chest, figure-4, trunk rotations, sciatic nerve glides). Working on getting into PT and exploring chiropractic care as well.
A few questions for anyone who's been through something similar:
? Has anyone dealt with anterosuperior labral fraying specifically — how long did recovery take for you?
? Did the burning/radiating nerve pain resolve on its own or did you need specific treatment for it?
? What stretches or home exercises actually helped without aggravating things?
? Did PT make a meaningful difference, or did you need injections (PRP, cortisone) to get over the hump?
? Any advice on managing the limp and preventing compensation injuries while recovering?
? For anyone who had similar symptoms — how long before you could return to normal activity and training?
Any insight from people who've been through this is genuinely appreciated. This has been a rough few weeks and I want to make sure I'm doing everything right to avoid making it worse or turning the fraying into a full tear. Thanks in advance.
