Am I Overthinking This? (Tree Maintenance Question)

Hi Tree Lovers & Enthusiasts!

If anyone knows a lot about Chinese pistache Trees I’d love to hear your advice/wisdom. I’m concerned my [Chinese pistache] is getting too top heavy, making it susceptible to snapping in a bad storm or tornado (we’re based in N. Dallas). I have someone coming tomorrow to look at it, but also wanted to ask here—should I thin her out a little, a lot, not at all?

By ‘thin’ I just mean remove most of the smaller branches, but keep the existing/mature branches. I don’t want any real ‘length’ taken away, just volume.

Im only asking because this happened to me a couple years ago and I was wrecked by it! It was so beautiful. The landscapers told me it was because the mulch has been built up around the base of the trunk for so many years, all the moisture caused it to weaken and snap like a toothpick in a bad storm we had.

Anyway, am I over thinking this?
