[Plugin] [NEW RELEASE] Visual Overhaul Suite (VOS) - Now a Plugin with Full UI Customization and More
Hey everyone,
I've been working on bundling all my previous VOS visual patches and enhancements into a single, installable plugin with a proper settings UI with added customizations. No more manually dropping Lua files into the patches folder and praying they don't break on the next update.
This is not an yet another "UI". This just alters the cover grid in the least invasive way possible.
Fully compatible with popular UIs like SimpleUI, ProjectTitle, Bookshelf.
If you have been using any of my patches previously, you can now remove them and install this plugin. Don't worry about the custom settings you set on those patches, you can configure everything in the VOS menu now.
What is VOS?
VOS is a one-stop plugin for customizing KOReader's file browser, cover grid, navigation, menus, and related interface elements. It grew out of the earlier SeriousHornet/KOReader.patches collection I'd been maintaining, but now everything is bundled, configurable through the UI, and all changes take effect without restarting.
Feature Highlights
Bottom Navigation Bar
- Configurable navigation bar for the file browser with adjustable size, labels, active-tab styling, and tab order
- Built-in tabs for History, Favorites, Collections, Search, and more community plugins
- Custom folder tabs with your own SVG or PNG icons
- Optional navigation bars in supported standalone views
- Compatible with SimpleUI's Navbar — when SimpleUI owns the file-manager layout, VOS stays out of its way.
Cover Grid Enhancements
- DPI-aware rounded corners for book and folder covers
- Configurable cover aspect ratio, fill and stretch behavior.
- Folder artwork support — place a
.cover.png,.cover.jpg,.cover.webp, etc. in any folder and VOS will use it as that folder's cover in the grid. No folder artwork? VOS falls back to a cached book cover from inside the folder - Folder names and item-count badges overlaid on folder covers
- Adjustable fading for finished books
- Three folder cover styles: single, collage (2×2 grid of book covers), and stack (overlapping covers)
Badges & Status
- Rounded reading-progress bar with optional dynamic length based on book size
- Percentage badge with adjustable dimensions, placement, and optional custom SVG/PNG icon
- Page-count badge with configurable colors, border, and position
- Numbered series badges or flap-style series indicators
- Resizable and repositionable reading / hold / finished status icons with optional custom artwork
- Configurable collection star
Clean Up Tools
Removes the existing Coverbrowser/ProjectTitle's widgets and artifacts for a clean slate. These are meant to let you swap in VOS replacements without visual conflicts.
- Disable the description hint bar
- Disable pagination in mosaic/list views
- Disable KOReader's default cover progress bar
- Disable the default collection star
Extras (Community Patches, Built In)
VOS absorbs a number of well-known community patches so you don't have to manage them separately:
- UI Font selection — pick a custom UI font with matching regular and bold files (sebdelsol)
- Hide empty folders / up-folder entry (sebdelsol)
- Hide last-visited underline (sebdelsol)
- Text overrides — replace underscores, restore trailing articles (joshuacant)
- Pagination in file-browser subtitles (zenixlabs)
- Quicksettings tab (qewer33)
- File-browser title bar customization (sebdelsol)
- Auto menu sizing (sebdelsol)
- Incognito mode — open a document without recording it in history (Craftwork2720)
Credits to all the original patch authors — VOS just packages their work alongside the new features.
Installation
- Download the latest release from the Releases page.
- Extract to KOReader's
pluginsdirectory so the path iskoreader/plugins/vos.koplugin/. - Restart KOReader.
- Enable Visual Overhaul Suite (VOS) in KOReader's plugin manager if needed, and restart again.
- Open VOS from Tools > Visual Overhaul Suite (VOS).
Do not place VOS files in koreader/patches, and do not copy the bundled SVG files to koreader/icons.
Configuration
- Suite-wide On/Off switch at the top of the VOS menu — disables all effects while keeping your settings intact
- Every single module or customization is toggle-able. Nothing is hard-coded.
- Most settings save and apply immediately; use Refresh UI if a view hasn't rebuilt yet
- All your VOS settings save under
koreader/settings/visualoverhaul.luaso you don't have to worry about losing your custom setup. - A few changes (UI font, Quick Settings tab, menu sizing) require a KOReader restart
- Built-in Check for Updates under About
Compatibility
- Developed against KOReader 2026.07 "Sailing Walrus"
- Compatible with SimpleUI v2.5, Project: Title v3.8.3, Bookshelf v4.2.1.
- Cover effects apply to the mosaic cover grid — they don't affect classic list views
- VOS uses process-wide hooks for some integrations; other patches or plugins that replace the same KOReader methods may conflict
