We are 19 days post op and my baby is hospitalized with a suspected GI Bleed. He will possibly need a blood transfusion. He hasn’t really eaten a full meal since surgery. We blamed it on normal recovery. We blamed it on the antibiotics and pain meds. We spoke to his vet last week and we began tapering off his pain meds. He still wasn’t interested in eating or drinking. Only a bite of food a day for a couple days. Today he completely didn’t want anything.

The ER Dr suspects the Carprofen caused ulcers and he has an active bleed. He had an episode of melena while he was doing diagnostic testing.

I know the medications say “take with food” but it’s very easy to blame the lack of appetite on ‘he’s recovering from major surgery.’

I’ve read a lot of stories on amputation and recovery and don’t remember reading anything on this so I wanted to put it out there to hopefully help someone in the future. Please please please make sure your babies eat and advocate if they’re not eating and still on medication.

My 8 year old pit has his forelimb amputated 13 days ago. He was “doing better than expected” when we picked him up after surgery. He has now been refusing to eat or drink for a couple days. He’ll have a couple bites from our hand and then will turn his head and refuse anymore. He seems depressed and just hides in the house.

I’ve tried chicken, steak, and beef.

We’ve adjusted his meds and there’s been no improvement.

Has anyone dealt with this? I’m not expecting him to be back to his normal self this soon but him not eating or drinking has me worried.
