If you think of timelines like a tree, a divergence is simply branches, theyre easy to trim if they start causing the tree issues.

BIFURCATION on the other hand (which is a real thing that happens to trees, mind you) is when the trunk splits two ways. this is much harder to deal with and makes the trees unstable and more prone to getting destroyed in storms.

of course instead of trees, its time, and unlike trees, the issue isn't outside impact, but rather the amount of energy they drain. a bifurcation is basically making a second entire core timeline, while divergences are simply slightly altered events that don't change too much from the core timeline and thus don't drain as much energy, and when they do, can easily be pruned off.
