Lake Travis High School Career Fair
Hey Austin and Lakeway folks! I’m one of the owners of Boxer Buddies Movers here in Austin, and this week we did something that felt pretty surreal: my wife (Jessica) and I went back to our old stomping grounds at Lake Travis High School for their career fair… as business owners this time… to recruit graduating Seniors to come work at our moving company this summer.
We both grew up in the Lakeway and Bee Cave area, graduated from LT, and now run a local moving company together. Walking those halls again (as a fat, old man), but this time standing behind a table talking about our moving companies in Austin, entrepreneurship, and small business instead of worrying about my grades and homework, was a wild experience.
We set up a little booth with a sign-up sheet and passed the business card out to anyone who was interested in working hard this summer. These students were really great people and I forgot how high quality of a person LT produces. I felt like some of the kids I spoke with were going places and I could actually trust them to come work for me. We usually have an age limit to come work for us, as you need to be at least 21 to drive our box trucks (for insurance purposes), but I could see myself hiring a few of the people I spoke with as helpers!
I say all that to say this..
I don’t want this just to be “we showed up once at a career fair and called it a day.” I’d like to actually find a way to get in touch with Lake Travis (and greater Austin) students who want to make $21/hr this summer. It’s a high paying job for that age group, not nearly as high as what we pay our drivers, but it’s a very tough job physically so they will earn every penny.
So, my ask is how can I get in touch with graduating seniors who would be interested in being movers in Austin for the summer before they go off to college, move away, get a “real job” or at least work at our moving company while they figure out their next steps in life?
Thanks y’all!
Will
