UNVR advice

Right now I’m pretty invested in the UniFi ecosystem as a non tech professional, simply like good WiFi and getting full speed that I pay for:
UDR7
U7 AP
8-port PoE switch
16-port switch
A few SuperLink temperature/humidity sensors
Currently one G6 Turret (about all the UDR7 can comfortably handle and I wanted to test it out under my eaves and it’s performed well)

I’d eventually like to end up with another 1–3 cameras (probably G6 Bullets and/or Turrets), but I’ll likely add them in phases due to both cost and finding the time to run Ethernet.

I’m getting pretty tired of my Wyze outdoor cameras. They’ve been unreliable, and I’m not a huge fan of relying on the Wyze cloud platform from both a security and reliability standpoint.

A few questions:
Is the UNVR as reliable as people say? I’ve seen a handful of reviews claiming UniFi cameras die after 2 years, but I’m not sure if that’s actually common or just the usual internet bias where people only post when something breaks.

Can I start with just one hard drive and add more later? This is just for my house, not Fort Knox, so I’m okay without RAID initially if it saves some money.

Where’s the best place to buy drives? UniFi Store? B&H? Somewhere else? Looking for the best bang for the buck.
Any recommendations on drive models? WD Purple, Purple Pro, Toshiba MG series, Seagate Exos, etc.?

Anything you’d do differently if you were building a 4–6 camera UniFi Protect system today?
Appreciate any advice or things you wish you knew before buying a UNVR.

I’m not a network or Low voltage guy but it’s now become my new fun nerding out hobby. I have 1 g6 turret looking to get the NVR and a couple more cameras. But thought it would be cool to get home assistant and do something like “G6 backyard camera detects person, turn Lutron caseta switches on”

Anyone have any cool things they recommend or particularly really enjoy? Not sure what’s all possible as I don’t have home assistant but have plenty of “smart things” such as the HVAC, kitchen appliances for some reason? Washer dryer, iRobot, some Hubspace smart outlets, Hubspace deadbolt pin pads, garage door with myQ, etc. looking for some fun unique automations or if it’s even worth it.

  1. Why does it keep saying camera lost power?

  2. Why is it so slow to load motion notifications? I’m running a single G6 on a udr7 before I invest in a UNVR and a few more cameras. Seems like my cheap ass Wyze cameras load quicker? Running a UDR7 and a U7 lite ap. But obviously hardwired into a switch to the camera.

Also not a network guy, just enough to get things setup. I checked all firmware is up to date on protect, network, and G6

I ran into an issue trying to run some wiring for PoE cameras.

I pulled down a section of my vinyl soffit and found it’s backed with solid plywood (closed/boxed soffit). I was originally planning to fish cable from the attic down into the soffit, but now I’m not sure if there’s actually access.

If I drill through the plywood, is there typically an open path into the attic in homes like this, or is it usually blocked at the eaves?

House was built in 1976 in southwestern PA. There are no soffit vents, but the attic seems to ventilate fine from what I’ve seen over the past few years.

First photo isn’t my house, just a reference that looks similar. Second photo is mine—I was test fitting a camera and realized there’s plywood behind the vinyl. The wire you see was just a temporary run from my switch to check the angle and placement.
