Epoxy Overpour Issues
Recently, I've been working on a project for a client that wanted a high-gloss epoxy topcoat finish, as they plan to play dominoes on it. Typically I work with water-based polyurethane, but I've done a few epoxy topcoats in the past.
My order of operations was as follows:
- Apply a sealing coat of tabletop epoxy.
- Once cured, sand out any imperfections.
- Clean the surface using mineral spirits.
- Apply epoxy topcoat.
Both denatured alcohol and a blowtorch were used to remove bubbles. I could see a few microbubbles within the seal coat, but nothing that might make the project irredeemable. At the time of pouring the final topcoat, I could not see any bubbles within the finish. However, the next morning, the project was full of them.
Ambient temperatures and humidity for the night were 70F and 45%. Air was conditioned prior to the pour.
I've never experienced such harsh bubbles appearing in my topcoats like this. They seem to follow the parh my hands took when I used to spread the epoxy around. Does anyone have any tips on how to prevent this from happening again? I'd love to improve my overpour technique.
Edit: Epoxy used was Superclear Tabletop Epoxy by FGCI. Epoxy was 80F when mixed.
