Wisconsin Dead Spots

Looking for some advice. Lawn was looking great in the early summer. We were gone for a while, but had a neighbor watering pretty consistently through the drier summer months.

There seems to be a lot of thatch. Was going to take it out and plant new seed shortly. But what could have caused this? Rest of the lawn looks decent enough
