I'm making this spoon as a birthday gift for a friend but as you can see a bug dug a channel through the wood.

My brother suggested filling the channel with a mix of sawdust and glue then sticking another piece of wood on the part I shaved down to restore the shape of the handle.

Of course being a spoon I would need the glue to be food safe and heat resistant, does such thing exist? Is there another way to fix it? Should I just start over?
