Adjustments Add Blank Space (or something like that)

- I've had a quick look and assume this isn't a technical issue, so I hope this is the right place to ask for help -
Fair warning: I'm very new to any kind of graphic design, so this may be something very simple. I've had a look around but I couldn't find any posts about this problem (though I might not know the best search terms to use).
I've noticed that when I apply Adjustments to something, whether that be the whole document or nested inside a group, it seems to add a large amount of blank space around the image(s). This shows in the previews as well as in exports. The additional space disappears when I toggle off the visibility of the Adjustment.
Is there a way of adding adjustments to the document/layers without adding this space?
