“Male” guinea pig gave birth!
My mom and I got two guinea pigs on 31st Jan. Both were born in December 2025, but from different litters.
We were told they’re two boars. One always seemed a little bigger and more dominant (rumblestrutting and sniffing the other one’s behind all the time), but we put that down to regular guinea pig social behaviour. The smaller one then started to put on some more weight, and we were happy to see it as he always seemed smaller and skinnier.
Well, fast forward to today (21st May). I woke up and went to greet them in the morning, and the smaller one was sitting in the corner of the cage, with a little baby snoozing beside her. Imagine my shock!
We have now put the (actual) boar in a separate enclosure to prevent any further accidental pregnancies, and will have to look into getting him neutered.
Mama and baby seem to be doing well. Surprisingly, there’s just one baby. I tried to determine if it’s a girl or boy, but couldn’t tell with certainty.
Planning to take them all to the vet soon. Once we know the baby’s sex, we can decide further steps.
If baby is a girl, we plan to keep her and expand the cage.
If baby is a boy, we’ll probably have to find someone to adopt him, as we can’t have two boars and one sow for fear of fighting :(
