What are healthy snacks for kids?

Getting kids to eat something healthy without a full meltdown is genuinely an art form.

The things that actually work in my experience  are snacks that are easy to eat, not too messy, taste good to kids, and aren't full of artificial colours and flavours:

  1. Fruit with peanut butter  is classic, filling, and most kids enjoy it
  2. Homemade chikki or roasted makhana  is nutritious and snackable
  3. Whole wheat bread with a spread  Britannia 100% Whole Wheat Bread with peanut butter or a mild cheese makes a quick, balanced snack between meals
  4. Biscuits with milk  Britannia Marie Gold is one of the safer everyday biscuit options for kids. It's not overly sweet, doesn't have a lot of additives, and pairs well with a glass of milk  which also means they're eating something with protein alongside it
  5. Salted snacks in moderation  Britannia Time Pass Salted Snacks are a good option when kids want something crunchy and savoury. Better than most chips because they're not heavily spiced or flavour-loaded, so they work for younger kids too

The general rule I follow: snacks should either have fibre, protein, or both. Anything that's just refined carbs and sugar is just pushing the hunger further by 20 minutes.

So, what are some of the go-to snacks for kids that are Mother-approved.

Healthy snacking really comes down to one thing: having the right stuff within reach. When hunger hits, and there's nothing convenient, you'll grab whatever is easiest, usually something you'll regret. Here's what I keep stocked across different hunger levels:

Light snacking:

  1. Fresh fruit - banana, apple, or a small bowl of cut fruit

  2. Rice cakes - low calorie, surprisingly satisfying

  3. Cucumber or carrot sticks with hummus

Actually filling:

  1. Roasted makhana - light but high protein

  2. Roasted chana - cheap, filling, great with chai

  3. A small handful of mixed nuts

The "I just want something with my chai" zone:

Britannia Marie Gold not nutritionally impressive, but way better than reaching for cream biscuits or chips. Sometimes you just want a light biscuit with your tea and that's fine.

The goal isn't perfection. It's making the default choice a decent one. What's your default snack when hunger sneaks up on you?
