Looking for D6 descendants

Good day everyone.

I previously made a post in this group regarding interviews for a university assignment on District Six. Thank you to everyone who has already responded or shown interest.

We are now also specifically looking to include children and grandchildren of former District Six residents, as well as younger people based in Cape Town who have any connection to District Six through family stories or heritage.

The aim is to capture both past memories and present day perspectives from younger generations.

We are aiming to complete all interviews by Friday as we will be moving into the next phase of our project next week.

If you are available or know someone who may be willing to assist, please feel free to comment below. If you are comfortable, you may also leave your email in the comments so we can contact you directly to arrange a time.

Thank you again for your time and support.

Pure childhood nostalgia

Used to collect these at school back around the 2010 World Cup era.

For some reason we used to call the seeds “dummy nuts”. No idea why. We’d fill plastic bags with pine cones, crack them open with bricks, roast them over fires at home, and hope there was actually something edible inside.

Half the time the seeds were rotten, dust, burnt, or crushed with shell pieces mixed in and we still ate them anyway.

The other memory I have is people throwing these at each other during a game called “on-on” when there was no tennis ball around. A closed pine cone to the head felt like a rock. Teachers eventually started threatening detention because kids kept launching them during games.

What is your favorite childhood nostalgic memory that kids today probably would not understand or experience the same way?

The two sides of Kalk Bay

If you’ve spent a morning at Kalk Bay watching the boats come in, then grabbed a coffee a few streets up, you know this place has two very different rhythms.

You’ve got the harbour side, early mornings, fishing crews, and years of trade and work built into the shoreline. And then you’ve got the village side, cafes, shops, and people coming through for the view and the vibe.

They share the same streets and coastline, but they don’t always feel like the same world.

For those who’ve worked, lived, or hung around here a while, what’s the biggest difference you notice in how these two sides use the space? Do they balance each other out, or does it feel like one’s pushing the other aside?

Keen to hear real perspectives from people who know Kalk Bay, not just the tourist version. Feel free to drop a comment with your thoughts!

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re doing well.

My name is Brandon, and I’m currently a student based in Cape Town with a focus on media and storytelling. As part of my work, I’ve been developing a documentary project centred on the lived experiences and lasting impact of the forced removals from District Six.

This project is not commercial and is not being done for financial gain. The intention is to help preserve oral histories and personal accounts that risk being lost over time, and to approach this chapter of history with honesty, care, and respect.

I’m looking to connect with former residents of District Six, or their close family members, who may be willing to share their experiences in a formal sit-down interview. These conversations would be conducted as part of a documentary project and may involve video recording, with full consent. Participants will be informed beforehand about how their contributions will be used, and nothing will be recorded or shared without clear permission. If anyone prefers audio-only or off-camera discussion, that can absolutely be arranged.

All conversations will take place at a pace and depth that participants are comfortable with, and boundaries will always be fully respected. There is absolutely no obligation to share anything beyond what someone feels safe discussing.

Where possible, I would prefer participants who are based in or around Cape Town, or who are able to travel into the city, but I’m also open to making alternative arrangements depending on individual circumstances.

If you’re open to it, even just a private conversation to ask questions before deciding would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for considering helping preserve these stories.
