I've just been in a local supermarket who announced closing time was in 5 minutes

Now I understand large shops can only trade for 6 hours on a Sunday, what does that mean in reality?

I was in the line and paid at 15.59, the person behind had a fully trolleys worth which would never have scanned and paid for before 16.00, would they still get served?
