My maternal grandmother in 1940 (8 years old) and at 18.

My grandmother, Myrle. She was half native American (Quapaw) and half French-American. She was cool to me because in the face of the deep south racism, she never shied away from who she was. Even though her white father faced a lot of hate for marrying a "red" woman, and her mother was treated like lesser than on a daily basis, my grandma demanded to be included. Her intelligence and humor helped her be accepted at school. Her big heart gained her many friends, and by the time school was ending she was the homecoming queen in her town, the first person "of color" to be named so. My grandpa told me shit hit the fan on main street that night and he got in more than one fight defending her, again. They were married for 69 years until her passing.
