I’m trying to identify a historical novel I read years ago.
Details I remember:
Set primarily in England, likely late medieval (probably before Henry VIII)
Female protagonist who studies medicine in a middle eastern country (Persia?) and practices as a physician
She is not disguised as a man, but uses a tall Muslim eunuch as a front, and he is publicly credited as the doctor
Early scene: she treats a bishop with a blocked urethra, using a reed as a catheter
She later falls in love with one of the king’s ministers and has his child
Tone is narrative historical fiction
Any ideas?
