Stuck in limbo on the M20
A few weeks ago, on the M20 heading to the Chunnel, I was cruising at 65 mph in the left lane at night. It was spitting with rain, there was a convoy of HGVs behind me, and a stream of about six cars overtaking in the middle lane at 70+ mph.
Suddenly, the gantry dropped to 40 mph.
Everyone else completely ignored the signs. I felt like a sitting duck trying to stick to 40 mph, especially when the next gantry showed the same limit. I'm aware of the grace period, so I slowed gradually, and the HGVs caught up instantly, got onto my bumper, and started flashing their lights. Cars whizzing by at 70 and I'm sitting here feeling like a moving chicane.
I had 3 choices: maintain the speed limit of the gantry and get killed by the lorry behind, swerve into the middle lane and take out myself and the driver next to me, or break the law and speed back up to 65.
In the end, I opted not to die and sped back up. What else are you meant to do? No ticket in the end, so maybe a mix-up with the gantries? I should really get a dashcam.
