to GPS or not to GPS

I had a GPSmap 64S for over a decade. It dropped out of my pocket in a wilderness area yesterday. Debating whether to replace it or to rely more on phone apps and paper maps.

It seems sensible to eliminate one bulky, heavy item from my pack, but I'm always out in the wilderness, and the maps one gets on the apps don't always work well, and you have to download them before you head out. A new GPSmap 65s is expensive. I'm old, getting older, and maybe won't be going out in the wilderness as much as I have in the past.
