Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid (Augmentin) for skin infection with PI-IBS / SIBO: What are the risks?
Hey everyone!
I recently developed a bacterial infection on my foot that didn't resolve with topical antiseptics. A doctor prescribed Amoxicillin plus Clavulanic Acid (Amoxiclav) 875/125 mg for 10 days, this combination is also sold under the name of Augmentin.
My encounter with the doctor was unsatisfactory to say the least.
Now I'm quite concerned because I've had PI-IBS (and very likely SIBO) for many years and I learned that Augmentin can be rough on the gut.
Has anyone here with confirmed or suspected PI-IBS and/or SIBO taken Augmentin or similar broad-spectrum antibiotics?
- Did you have GI symptoms?
- How bad was the diarrhea/bloating, et cetera?
- Did you manage to tolerate it (e.g. with a specific diet, binders, ...)?
- Did you have to stop/switch?
- Can you still take Loperamide (Imodium) or is this a no-no?
- How about non-GI symptoms?
I'm seriously considering asking for a different antibiotic if the risks for gastrointestinal symptoms are very high. Any experiences or insights would be appreciated!
