Harming yourself= True love?

I recently read a book (couldn't make it past just 30-40 chapters and that too while skimming through, not even completely reading. The book has like 70 chapters in one book and 90 chapters in the second book.) where the Male Lead and the Female Lead were completely in love with each other. However, the Male Lead has a peanut allergy. But, the moment the FL offered him peanuts, he took them and ate them just because he did not want to "upset" her.

  1. Do these people even know how peanut allergies work? Sometimes they are so intense that even if someone opens a packet of peanuts near you, you will get affected.

  2. How the hell did the ML even think of having the peanuts just because she would be 'sad' if he didn't eat them. What about his parents who have raised him and loved him all his life? Would they be happy knowing their son died or got admitted in the ER for a girl he met 6 months ago?

Since when has harming yourself being considered as true love? Also, the writers have portrayed the ML has exceptionally genius which is pretty questionable after this scene. He was 18! Not 8 that he would not know what he should eat and what he shouldn't.

Another book I read quiet a while ago had a scene in which the ML had extremely spicy pani puri even if he couldn't bear the spice just because his girlfriend liked them. He was literally sweating and gasping but he still had them. Some people might consider it romantic but this is just stupid.

Torturing yourself in the name of love is just idiocy.
