How much of a refund should I shoot for here?
I booked 3 nights at a private house in the mountains for me and my fiances 5 year anniversary. Made sure it had a hot tub because that's what we both really wanted. The first night went great!
Then, on day 2, the water stopped flowing from all sources at ~4 pm. We checked around to see if there was anything that we could do to fix it, but we found nothing. Now we have no shower, no toilets, no washing dishes, nothing! We contacted the host, to which they responded about 30 minutes later (4:58pm), asking if we checked the breaker box for the water pump. We responded within 2 minutes (5:00 sharp) to say yes, the breaker was still on. Then we reached out again (twice) that night about it. Well it seems like 5:00 was clock out time because they didn't respond until 9 am the next day when they called us. They told us they'll be "sending somebody out soon." So we spend our entire morning not doing anniversary things, waiting for somebody to show up. At 1:00PM somebody shows up, looks at the pump/well and says "they need to get a bigger company than me to fix this." Which is understandable, it's not this guys fault so im not upset with him.
The host then contacts us at 1:30 to say "somebody else will be there soon!" Now all of the sudden it's 4 o'clock, we've spent the entirety of our anniversary morning and afternoon waiting for them to fix this, and AGAIN, we cannot do "anniversary things" all day long like we had planned when we spent the money on this. The second company now shows up and Its been 24 hours since we've had running water. Now the second company has to wait for yet another person to get here (took another hour and some change).
Their hot tub rules are "shower before, shower after." If there's signs of foreign things (deodorant, obvious negligence, etc) we can be charged for it. So we technically don't get to use the hot tub while we wait. We aren't spending our anniversary day in private at all. We can't leave the place for a bit because we don't trust the strangers with access to the house to not let our dog out.
Edit: after helping the plumbers get the pump out and a new one put back in (holy shit 400 ft of hose full of water plus a pump is heavy lol) we have "running water!" We can't use it before boiling it though because the well was "stirred" so much. So no drinkable water but at least we can wash our hands after boiling some water! We're currently pushing for an extended stay because we really wanted a whole day where we didn't have to leave the house or do anything other than relax and enjoy good food and the hot tub
update: host offered a one night refund and the $90 reservation fee refunded as well. Couldn't extend our stay because it's booked for the weekend
**Edit AGAIN: We left for the grocery store, get back an hour later and what do ya fuckin know, the water is gone AGAIN! Unreal
Final update: We got 2/3 nights refund plus a refund for the reservation fee. I'm happy with these results, it nearly sullied our vacation but we made do with what we had. The last thing I'll say is that their property manager is unbelievably laughable, but the host themself is delightful and accommodating. All things considered I'd probably come back here if I knew the water situation wouldn't shit the bed on me again.
