My advice to first-time investors
Here's the advice I'd give myself 10 years ago when I decided to start building a portfolio:
- Start with an ETF to get exposure to the broader market
- Crypto, prediction markets, day trading is not investing
- Only invest in individual stocks if you understand the business model and can read/ interpret financial statements
- Figure out what type of investor you are
- Ignore headlines as most of them are just noise and do not materially impact an investment thesis
- Investing is a long-term game. You might win short-term, but that's mostly because you got lucky.
- Do not sell your winners if the investment thesis is still intact
Apply this rigorously and you will be fine.
