So back in the 9th grade I read a book about a group of children travelling from Soviet occupied territory to the Allied control zone in Cologne. Along the way they meet an elderly man and his wife also travelling to Cologne, but not long after the man's wife dies. Now the children and the old man are trying to reach Cologne while also concealing the wife's death so they can bury her in Cologne. Best date range I could give for publication would be late 80's to mid 90's since I got it from the school library. Beyond that I don't remember much else, unfortunately.
