How could the sheriff (written as bright and observant) know who Annie Wilkes is and where she lives, but have no idea she made national news going on trial for serial baby killing? She didn’t change her identity. Her face and name were in the paper.

Even if the story only made local news (absolutely impossible given the case), everyone knows everyone’s business in a small town. Does this happen the same way in the book? I believe the sheriff character doesn’t exist in the same way.
