#028 The Roman Gym - 2,000 Years Before Planet Fitness

This mosaic was created around 350 AD and discovered in the Villa Romana del Casale in Sicily.

The young women are exercising in a palaestra, the Roman equivalent of a gym.

They wear a subligar (athletic briefs) and a strophium, a breast band often described as the ancestor of the sports bra.

The scene shows:

-Weight training
-Running
-Discus throwing
-Ball games

Archaeologists have also discovered Roman halteres stone and metal weights used for strength training and athletic competitions.

Many Roman cities featured a palaestra, usually attached to the public baths. A typical workout was followed by:

-Hot and cold baths
-Massage with scented oils
-Cleaning the skin with a strigil

To the Romans, fitness wasn't just about appearance.

They inherited the Greek ideal of Kalokagathia—the harmony of a healthy body, a disciplined mind and good character.

Or, as the Roman poet Juvenal later wrote:

The goal wasn't to become Hercules. It was to become a better person.
