Vet wants me to stop feeding my dog raw food
I transitioned my dog to raw food a few years ago cause he was super sensitive to kibble and had constant GI issues like diarrhea. I switched kibble brands a few times and ended up on prescription kibble but still wasn’t seeing any benefits from it. When I switched to raw the change was immediate, less daily stools and no diarrhea. He’s been doing great on it ever since. He recently had a vomiting situation and was throwing up white foam. The vet did a pancreatitis test, it came back negative. They did an x-ray and saw nothing except small bone fragments from the pre-made raw food I get (from rawfedk9). He also got bloodwork done and nothing came back except dehydration due to vomiting. They couldn’t find the cause of it which is frustrating. It’s a full balanced meal so I’m not making it myself or giving him full bone. I know cooked bones can splinter so I’ve never given him those either. BUT the vet was super negative about raw food and was concerned about the small bone content in his intestines. I’m not sure what to do because I don’t want to go back to filler-filled kibble that they want to put him on.
UPDATE: I appreciate everyone’s responses/continued responses!!! This vet is newer to us and they have multiple vets so it’s not a designated vet each time. They’ve all been lovely for the most part except for the raw diet comments. I’m in Southern California so I need to try to find more holistic vets but haven’t done much research yet. He’s also currently on rawfedk9 and they don’t have any option without bone. I did some research and found Albrights has a balanced beef or lamb option without the bone so I’m thinking of switching him to that. He’s also not the type of dog to get into stuff cause he’s glued to my hip and if he does eat something random off the ground I pull it out of his mouth completely 🥲 The only thing I’m still worried about is him gagging/coughing. He’s currently taking carafate and famotidine for these issues so we’ll see if he gets sick again.
