Does anyone know if the HEVs on reps serves any function or is it just for show?

I'm not planning to deep dive anytime soon but just wondering about its functionality. No reps of mine are coming near salt water.

got an ORF Seamaster Diver 300m on order from Andiot and I think it has a HEV.
