What are the vent holes on the side of these “closed-back” headphones for?

What are the vent holes on the side of these “closed-back” headphones for?

I removed the foam and noticed a lot of small holes along the side of the earcup. The specs say they’re a closed-back, but I can’t tell whether these holes connect to the ear side of the cup or to the back side of the driver.

If they connect to the ear side, why would the manufacturer put so many holes there and then cover them with foam? what kind of acoustic tuning is it?

If they connect to the back side, are they basically driver vents? And if so, wouldn’t that much venting make them closer to open-back than closed-back?

I’m just curious about the purpose of this design. I’d love to hear from anyone who has any idea or a theory.

So hard to find a normal 3.5 mm headphone cable?

I recently bought headphones that came with a long coiled cable. It’s nice for home use, but too bulky for portable use with my phone.

I’m looking for something very basic:

  1. 3.5 mm male-to-male standard 2 ring stereo, no mic/remote
  2. 1.2 to 1.5 m long, thin, soft cable
  3. Straight, compact plugs on both ends (angled plug doesn’t work well with USB-C adapter)
  4. Black
  5. Good quality from an established audio brand, Not DIY, not shiny/braided “upgrade” cables

Surprisingly, this has been really hard to find. Most cables are either too bulky, have angled plugs, include mic/remote/TRRS connectors, use 2.5 mm on one end, look very cheaply made, or are expensive shiny upgrade cables.

The closest I found is supposedly a Beats cable, but it’s gray and might be fake.

It seems like this only exists as an accessory included with certain headphones, and you need luck to find one separately. Any ideas where to get one?
