Road trip from Nagoya through Gifu, Nagano, Yamanashi

Ive looked around and I cant exactly find the right answer im looking for.
Me and my family are planning on starting a road trip in Nagoya then headed out to somewhere around Takayama (stay 2 nights there), then onto somewhere around Matsumoto (2 nights here) then head down a town near Kofu (2 nights here also).
Is the 2 nights at each a viable option to cruise around and just stop in at places. We are pretty relaxed and will have some certain places we will want to see but also just want to be out on the road and finding quirky little stops all around through the mountains. We have the option of adding 1 more night if that is even helpful at all? But would like to keep that night open to try and get tickets to the Sumo wrestling in Tokyo at the end of our trip.
The dates we will be going is Jan 16th - Jan 22nd.
At this time its just straight planning and any helpful tips would be appreciaed. Even if it is maybe stay 4 night in matsumoto and do day trips with our car from there.
Very comfortable in winter driving also
