Decrease weight on weighted pull-ups?

I tried moving up in weight from 45lbs to 50lbs today on weighted pull-ups. At 45lbs I could do 18 total reps (3x6), but at 50 I could just barely eke out 4 reps. I think that means that the 5lbs jump was too much for me, but it was also after a climbing session so I was also kind of tired. That made me start thinking: when is it appropriate to decrease the weight even when you can do just a few reps with good form?
