Seeking Advice: Blood Pressure Spikes After Increasing Losartan Dose

Hi everyone,

I am seeking some insight into my husband’s blood pressure management. About two months ago, we discovered by chance that he has hypertension (readings in the 140s/90s).

He was initially prescribed 25 mg of Losartan, which provided some improvement. After one month, his doctor increased the dosage to 50 mg because his readings were still consistently above 120/80. Interestingly, his numbers are now higher than they were on the 25 mg dose.

A few factors that may be relevant:

  • Consistency: He unfortunately missed three days of medication during the transition between the two doses.
  • Lifestyle & Diet: He is a non-smoker, does not drink, exercises a few times a week (maybe not enough), and maintains a very healthy diet. We have actively lowered his sodium intake and have trialed both beetroot juice and beetroot powder to support his heart health. He is slightly overweight, but his habits are otherwise excellent.
  • Family History: Both of his parents have high blood pressure.
  • Recent Changes: We moved to the UK at the same time he started the 50 mg dose, so there has been significant environmental stress.

I am very concerned about his health and want to ensure we address this effectively. Has anyone experienced a paradoxical increase in blood pressure when increasing a dosage, or does the period of missed doses typically impact stability this significantly? Any insights or suggestions on what we should discuss with his doctor would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.
